The SlackerFactor software was originally developed for use by it's author, Gunnar Ristroph, for tracking shared living costs for a house of college students. As the software was perfected, other groups wanted to set up their own SlackerFactor systems -- other student living arrangements, group trips, clubs and joint hobbyist projects -- eventually the overhead of maintaining the accounts grew to require payment for the long-term accounts.

The software is still maintained by Gunnar, but the hosting has been moved to a commercial service and a full-time system administrator is on call to handle backups and backup recovery and other issues.
